Citizens United is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 and currently headed by President David Bossie. Its offices are on Pennsylvania Avenue in the Capitol hill area of Washington, D.C. The organization's mission reads:[1]
Citizens United is an organization dedicated to restoring our government to citizens' control. Through a combination of education, advocacy, and grass roots organization, Citizens United seeks to reassert the traditional American values of limited government, freedom of enterprise, strong families, and national sovereignty and security. Citizens United's goal is to restore the founding fathers' vision of a free nation, guided by the honesty, common sense, and good will of its citizens.[1]

Citizens United Productions (CUP) is the media and marketing arm of Citizen United. CUP has produced more than 20 documentaries from a conservative perspective, often in conjunction with conservative pundits and politicians. Newt & Callista Gingrich, Dick Morris, Michele Bachmann, and Fred Thompson have all appeared in CUP documentaries.[2]

Citizens United was founded in 1988.

Leadership

The president and chair of the board is David Bossie. He has held the position since 2000. Michael Boos is vice president and general counsel.[1]

2014 elections

As of November 2013, Citizens United had spent $164,484 on the 2014 election cycle. lndependent expenditures totaled $25,984, all going to support the candidacy of Quin Hillyer, a Republican running in Alabama's 1st Congressional District. Campaign donations went exclusively to Republican candidates-- $20,000 to senate candidates and $138,500 to candidates running for the House of Representatives.[4][5]

2012 elections

Citizens United spent $1,064,003 in the 2012 elections: a total of $285,003 on independent expenditures, of which, $209,483 was spent in support of Republicans, $48,150 against Republicans, and $27,370 against Democrats; a total of $629,000 was contributed to individual Republican candidates for the House of Representatives; a total of $150,000 was contributed to Republican candidates for Sente; no money was given to individual Democratic candidates for either House or Senate.[7][8]
