A Columbia City Charter Amendment measure was on the April 5, 2011 ballot in the city of Columbia which is in Boone County.

This measure was approved

  • YES 7,195 (68.61%)Approveda
  • NO 3,292 (31.39%)[1]

This measure sought to amend the city charter so that members of the city council and the city Mayor will receive an annual stipend which will be adjusted every three years.[2] Since 1949 the jobs had been voluntary where as most other city pay these positions out of their budgets. This measure was proposed because the job has more responsibilities and only makes sense to have those who work for the city in these positions to get paid for their services. Since this measure was approved, it will not be implemented for another three years so current office holders will not benefit outright by it. Proponents also noted that only those with large amounts of money can afford to hold these positions so it also limits candidates who would run.[3]

The Columbia City Chamber of Commerce has issued an endorsement for this measure.[4]
