Comal County Justice Center Bond Proposal (May 2010)
This measure was defeated
- YES 2,142
- NO 3,463
The county commission planned to build a new Justice Center, but a petition was circulated and filed with the necessary 3,325 signatures to force the issue to a vote by county residents. The petitioners were confident the issue would be rejected by voters, many people who signed had the opinion that the project was ill conceived and not worth the money it would take to build. Commissioners had been working on the project for years and estimated the cost to be about $37.8 million.
In a letter to a local Comal county newspaper, a resident brought up the issue of commissioners not doing their jobs by not asking permission on such a large project. Commissioners could have easily put this issue on the November 2009 ballot for free, getting approval or disapproval sooner. But now since a special election will be held, $25,000 will be taken out of the taxpayers pockets to pay for this election. This letter noted that the bond election will probably be defeated by 80/20 due to so many residents upset about the commission trying to pass this without approval.
