Controller/Comptroller is a state level position in 13 states. Most Controllers/Comptrollers share duties similar to state Treasurers, exercising varying powers related to budgetary and management matters.
Of the 13 states that have the position, 9 are elected by the people. These include California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New York, South Carolina, and Texas. The Alaska Comptroller, Colorado Controller, and New Jersey Comptroller are appointed, while the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is elected by the General Assembly.
