October 7, 2008 Confusion rises over Tennessee Felon's Voting Rights

As Tennessee has some of the least restrictive laws on felons being given the right to vote, the confusion on which ex-convicted felons can and cannot vote are increasing.[1]

Confusion

State election officials said a 2006 law made restoring felons’ voting rights easier. Still, Tennessee is one of 11 states that doesn’t automatically give those rights back once you're out of prison. The ACLU recently released a study they said shows widespread confusion about laws allowing felons voting rights. A couple weeks ago, a federal judge in Nashville rejected a suit that could have automatically restored the voting rights of thousands of convicted felons who were contesting state law.[1]

Despite some lingering confusion, the number of felons who will vote this year is up: 1,200 as of the registration deadline.[1]
