Congressman Matheson claims to be a target in redistricting
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah: Representative Jim Matheson, currently Utah's only Democrat in Congress, said that he expects that redistricting will alter the boundaries of his district to make it as difficult as possible to win re-election. He said, "There's no question I'm a target. My gosh, 10 years ago, the Wall Street Journal said it was the most egregious example of gerrymandering in the country. Of course that's what they're doing. We all know it."
Matheson is confident however, claiming that he can absolutely keep his seat no matter how the lines are redrawn. He says, "The most Republican congressional district in America represented by a Democrat is me. So I think I know how to run a good campaign and win."
He goes on to say, "I don't think elected officials should be doing this. This isn't just about me. Every citizen in Utah has to put up with the results of this flawed process." President of the Senate, Michael Waddoups disagrees, stating that Matheson "made some very erroneous suppositions."
He claimed that the legislature's only goal is to create equal districts based on population, as was the goal 10 years ago.
