Consolidation of the Fortuna Union and Rohnerville Elementary School Districts, Measure U (November 2011)
Measure U's approval means that the two elementary school districts will be combined into one. The consolidation took place at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. The new, combined, district will be established in July of 2012 and it will have an interim board appointed by the Humboldt County Superintendent of Education. Voters will elect a school board to that new, combined district in November 2012.
Humboldt County has a Committee on School District Reorganization. This group made the final decision that the consolidation plan hammered out by the two current school boards was ready to move forward to a vote of the public.

According to Becky Giacomini, Fortuna's assistant superintendent of business, the consolidation will save money on purchasing books, transportation and cafeteria costs. She said, "It is for the kids, and that's why we're trying to let the community know the kids all deserve to have the same benefits in all of the schools. There's going to be a few bumps in the road, but in the long run, I think it's a great thing."
fortuna resident Sharon Berti was opposed to Measure U. She said, "My biggest concern about the consolidation is I don't really know what a yes vote is going to mean for the district's structure. If the consolidation occurs, how is that going to affect students? Is it really in the best interest of students?"
