Of the 13 states that have the position, nine are elected by the people. These include California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New York, South Carolina and Texas. The Alaska Comptroller, Colorado Controller and New Jersey Comptroller are appointed, while the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is elected by the General Assembly.
