Corpus Christi Memorial Coliseum Referendum (May 2011)
There may be a Corpus Christi Memorial Coliseum Referendum on the May 2011 ballot in Nueces County for voters in the city of Corpus Christi.
A petition has been filed to save the Memorial Coliseum. 8,234 valid signatures are needed in order to move this petition into a referendum vote for city residents. Currently the city plans to demolish this building, the petition was filed in order to save it and restore it. If the council disregards the petition and tears down the building, if it does go to a vote and is approved then they would be forced to rebuild it. The building was closed in 2004, it is a WWII memorial, and would need around $11 million in order to be restored and brought up to building codes. The cities Secretary Office will validate the signatures and if the petition has enough it will then be decided when the issue will be voted on by residents.
