McDaniel defeated Joe M. Silk (R), Bethany Farley (I), and James Skipper (I) in the special election on February 14, 2012. McDaniel garnered 61.8% of the vote. Both major party candidates won contested primaries on November 8, 2011. [3][4][5]

McDaniel ran for re-election to Oklahoma House District 1. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 26, 2012. He was unchallenged in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[6][7]
