Ford was a candidate for the Tennessee State House of Representatives in 2002 but was not elected. He then joined the Tennessee State House in 2007.
Ford served in the United State Army from 1959 to 1968. He then worked for Major League Baseball as an Umpire from 1974 to 2001. He has also worked as a farmer and is now retired.
Ford attended Eastern Tennessee University from 1961 to 1962.
