Muhlbauer owns and operates a family farm with his wife, Patti and sons, David and Robert. He previously served in the Iowa House from 1983 to 1993, and was a Crawford County Supervisor from 2004 to 2009. He has also served on the boards of a number of community organizations, e.g. the Crawford Co. Development Corporation, Youth Emergency Services in Cherokee, IA, and West Central Community Action in the town of Harlan. Muhlbauer and his wife, Patti, have three adult children.

Muhlbauer ran in the 2012 election for Iowa House of Representatives District 12. Muhlbauer ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 5, 2012 and defeated Barney Bornhoft in the general election on November 6, 2012.[1][2]
2010
Muhlbauer won election to the Iowa House of Representatives, defeating Daniel D. Dirkx (R) in the November 2 general election.[3]
Muhlbauer was nominated for the 51st House district seat July 19th in a special convention. The convention was called because Democrat Larry Lesle dropped out of the race before the primary. [4]
