From 2005 to 2008, Biss was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and from 2002 to 2005, the L.E. Dickson Instructor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago. He previously made an unsuccessful bid for the 17th District seat in 2008. He volunteered for organizations supporting Senator John Kerry in the 2008 presidential elections and claims to be a "seasoned grassroots organizer."[1] He serves on the Evanston Environment Board, was President of the Democratic Party of Evanston and serves on the board of the Indo-American Democratic Organization and the Chicago branch of Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century.
Biss earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Biss won election in the 2012 election for Illinois State Senate District 9. Biss was unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2012 and defeated Glenn Farkas (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[3][4]
