Dave Neil was the Commissioner of Labor in Iowa. He was replaced by Michael Mauro on May 1, 2011. He was previously a

statewide United Auto Workers leader.[1]

Political Career

Iowa Commissioner of Labor (2005-2011)

Iowa Workforce Development director (2006-2007)

During his time as commissioner, Neil accomplished many things, including the following:

  • Clean up of a pay scandal at a state-funded central Iowa job training office.
  • Investigated Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Postville for alleged child labor violations.
  • Battled Henry's Turkey Service over wage and hour violations involving developmentally disabled workers at its West Liberty plant.
  • Secured adequate funding for the Iowa occupational safety and health program.
  • Beefed up the Iowa OSHA office's consultation division, educating businesses to improve worker safety.[1]

State Sen. Bill Dotzler, D-Waterloo said "I'd say Dave Neil is one of the most effective labor commissioners this state's ever seen." He has been a friend of Neil's for many years and was a fellow UAW member and John Deere co-worker.[1]

Neil was the acting Iowa Workforce Development director from 2006-2007.[1]

After announcing his retirement, Neil said, "I feel my time was well spent. I sure didn't make everybody happy. But in today's world, that's impossible. You move ahead with the information you have at the time."[1]

Personal

Neil enjoys fishing, golfing and traveling.[1]
