Chavez is an attorney whose first bid for political office came when he ran and lost against Michael Sanchez for New Mexico State Senate in 2000. His father, Tibo Chavez, formerly held the offices of state senator and lieutenant governor and ran unsuccessfully for governor.[1]
He is not running for re-election to the New Mexico House of Representatives in 2012.[2] Instead, he is running for election to the State Senate.[3]

2012
Chavez did not run for re-election to the New Mexico House of Representatives in 2012.[5] Instead, he ran for election to the State Senate.[6] Chavez won the Republican primary for State Senate District 29 on June 5, 2012. He was defeated by Michael Sanchez in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.
