Elections
2014
Gill considered a rematch in 2014. On May 3, 2013 Gov. Pat Quinn named Gill as assistant director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, and Gill confirmed that he will not seek the 13th District seat again.[2]
2012
Gill lost to Republican Rodney Davis.[4] Gill ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Illinois' 13th District. Gill won the March 20, 2012 Democratic primary in a tight race with Matthew Goetten. [5] The signature filing deadline was December 27, 2011. He would have faced incumbent Tim Johnson (R) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[6]
On April 5, 2012 Timothy V. Johnson announced his plans to retire.[7] He will not run for re-election in the general election.[7] Republican party chairmen from the 14 counties in the 13th congressional district selected Rodney Davis as Johnson's replacement to run against Gill (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012.
Following redistricting, the newly redrawn 13th district was more favorable to Democrats. That, combined with the retirement of Republican incumbent Tim Johnson, turned the 13th from a safe Republican seat to a swing district.[8]
