Long was a Fort Wayne City Councilman from 1988 to 1995. From 1991 to 1995 he was on the Urban Enterprise Zone Board of Fort Wayne. He joined the Indiana State Senate in 1996 and has served in that position since. He is currently President Pro Tempore.
Long has worked as Attorney/Partner for Moss, Crowell, Harris. He is currently General Counsel for Pizza Hut of Fort Wayne, Incorporated.
Long attended Wabash College. He went on to receive his BA from the University of California at Davis. He then earned his JD from the University of Santa Clara.
