Macko was defeated by republican David Joyce.[2] Macko ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Ohio's 14th District. Macko faced Dale Virgil Blanchard (D) and Elaine R. Mastromatteo (G) and an appointed Republican nominee in the November 6, 2012 general election.

Incumbent Steven C. LaTourette announced his retirement on July 31, 2012, delaying the announcement long enough to prevent the need for a special election to fill the 14th district seat. A replacement nominee will be appointed to fill the Republican nomination.[3][4]

The Washington Post listed the House of Representatives elections in Ohio in 2012 as one of the states that could determine whether Democrats retake the House or Republicans will holds its majority in 2013.[5] Ohio tied with Pennsylvania for 9th on the list.[5]
