Rust earned a BA in Mathematics from Valley City State College in 1967; a MA in Teaching from Bowling Green State University in 1972; and an Education Specialist Degree in Education Administration from Tri-College University in 1994. Rust and his wife, Claudia, have four children; Erin, Lindsey, Shellann, and Tyler.
Rust has worked as a teacher in North Sargent Public School from 1967-1974; was the Superintendent of Jud and Regent in North Dakota from 1974-1980; and was Superintendent of Schools from 1980-2008.[1]

Elections
2012
Rust ran in the 2012 election for North Dakota Senate District 2. Rust and fellow incumbent Bob Skarphol ran unopposed in the Republican primary on June 12. They defeated Dorvan Solberg in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[2]

On November 4, 2008, Rust won election by finishing 1st out of 4 candidates for District 72 of the North Dakota House of Representatives.[3]
