A vote about whether to recall Deb Schmidt from her elected position as mayor of Whitewood, South Dakota, took place on September 13, 2011.

Schmidt was retained in her position as mayor with 59% of the vote.[1]

Rusty Karlson and Mark Larimore led the recall effort. They accused Schmidt of "misconduct, malfeasance and nonfeasance." They said that she denied special pay to police officers, took disciplinary action against police officers without informing them, instructed the finance officer to alter or falsify time cards, and hired a summer recreation manager without the approval of the city council.[2]

In response to the recall allegations, Schmidt said, ""There are council actions and policies that back up everything I did. The city attorney was consulted several times on police matters. I feel we were above the board on everything we did."[2]
