Shaughnessy is a former mayor of Charlotte, Michigan. She served as mayor from 2005-2009. Deb has also worked as a treasury clerk, staff writer for Charlotte Community Newspapers, and executive director of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. She also served as a legislative aide from January 1995 to December 2004.
Shaughnessy graduated from Lansing Community College with a general Associates Degree in Public relations in 2007.

Shaughnessy won election to the District 71 Seat in 2010. Shee defeated Cheryl Haddock, Laurie Raines and Britt Slocum in the August 3 Republican primary. She defeated Theresa Abed (D) in the general election on November 2, 2010.
