Current officeholder
The current auditor is R. Thomas Wagner, Jr.. Wagner, a Republican, was first appointed to his position in 1989 to fill the unexpired term of his predecessor. In 2010, over twenty years later, he won re-election for the sixth time -- a record for the office. Wagner will next come up for re-election in 2014.
Before becoming auditor, Wagner was a state bank examiner in the office of the State Bank Commissioner and a staffer for the Delaware House of Representatives. He also served two terms as mayor of Camden, DE. Wagner holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Richmond, and an MBA from Wilmington College.
Authority
The office of auditor is established in Article III, Section 21 of the Delaware Constitution.

| The terms of the office of the Attorney General, the Insurance Commissioner, the Auditor of Accounts and the State Treasurer shall be four years. These officers shall be chosen by the qualified electors of the State at general elections, and be commissioned by the Governor. |
Qualifications
There are no particular qualifications for the office of state auditor.
Elections
Auditors are elected every four years during federal midterm election years (2006, 2010, 2014, etc.). They take office in January of the year following their election.
Term limits
There are no term limits associated with the office of auditor.
Vacancies
If a vacancy occurs in the office of auditor, the governor appoints a replacement to serve until the next election. Details of vacancy appointments are laid out in Article III, Section 9 of the Delaware Constitution.
Duties
The auditor's office is responsible for conducting postaudits of state agencies' financial transactions, a comprehensive annual financial report of the entire state government, and performance audits of other government programs. It also evaluates the management practices of state agencies.
