Education
Smith earned his BA from the University of South Carolina in 1962.
Professional experience
Smith served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1960. He then served in the United States Army Reserve from 1960 to 1965. From 1962 to 1965, he was a Business Official at the First National Bank of South Carolina. He then worked as Branch Manager at the South Carolina National Bank from 1965 to 1967. Smith worked for the Medical College of Georgia as an Administrator from 1967 to 1999. He is now retired.
Political experience
Smith served on the North Augusta City Council from 1998 to 2000. He joined the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2000 and served in that position until 2010, representing the 83rd District.
