Hightower was first elected in the January 3, 2012 special election run-off. The special election was called to fill the vacancy created when Tim Bearden (R) resigned to accept an appointment as Director of the Georgia Law Enforcement Training Center.[1]

Hightower ran in the 2012 election for Georgia House of Representatives District 68. Hightower ran unopposed in the Republican primary on July 31, 2012. The general election took place on November 6, 2012. [2] Hightower ran unopposed in the general election.[3]

2011
Hightower and Alan Martinez (R) were the top two vote-getters in the December 6 special election. They faced fellow Republicans Thom Fitzpatrick, Tim Whetstone, and Marc Lattanzio. Libertarian candidate James Camp also ran. Hightower and Martinez received 41.8% and 21.3% of the vote, respectively. They proceeded to a run-off election on January 3, 2012 where Hightower defeated Martinez.[4][5]
