Earl S. Hines was a federal magistrate judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas from 1984 to 2011. Hines officially retired on August 1, 2011. His term was set to end in March of 2016 when he retired.
With almost twenty-eight years on the bench, Hines was the longest serving active Texas magistrate judge at the time of his retirement.
Judge Hines began his career in 1967 as a law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Joe J. Fisher. He became an Assistant Texas Attorney General in 1969. Hines then worked as a private practice lawyer from 1971 to 1983.
