  • In 2009, at least 117 political recall efforts have been launched in at least 21 states.
  • Through September 2009, at least sixteen known recall efforts culminated in either the resignation of an official prior to a recall vote, or with a vote to turn the official out of office.
  • 29 recall campaigns failed to make the ballot or, if they did make the ballot, the officeholder retained his or her seat.
  • A number of 2009's recall efforts faced significant legal obstacles on the way to a vote with challenges to signatures or to the language used on recall petitions.
