Sobel attended the Florida Democratic Convention in 1991. She was Vice Mayor/Commissioner for the City of Hollywood from 1992 to 1998. In 1999 she was on the Executive Committee of the Democratic Platform Committee. She then served in the Florida State House of Representatives from 1999 to 2006. She has also been Democratic Precinct Captain of Hollywood 61V since 1988.
Sobel has worked as a School Teacher and Community Activist. She has been Deputy Registrar for the Supervisor of Elections since 1990. She is also currently President of the Emrelle Preventive Skin Care Company, Limited.
Sobel earned her BA in History from Brooklyn College in 1967. She went on to receive her MA in Social Studies from the City University of New York in 1968. She then earned her MA in Learning Disabilities from Columbia University in 1975. She later received her Certificate in Leadership from John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2003.

Sobel won re-election in the 2012 election for Florida State Senate District 33. Sobel ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 14, 2012, and defeated Juan Selaya (R) and Rita Gambardella (I) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2]

On November 4, 2008, Sobel won election to the Florida Senate from Florida's 31st Senate district. Sobel received 131,514 votes in the election, defeating Ellyn Drotzer (write-in), who received 10 votes.[3] Sobel raised $385,003 for her campaign.[4]
