With allegations of voter registration fraud heating up in other parts of the country and an estimated 7,000 to 11,000 illegal immigrants living in New Bedford, concerns about voter fraud have surfaced recently, but city and state officials say they are unfounded.[1]
Concerns Quelled
City Elections Commissioner Maria Tomasia said Tuesday the voter registration system in place in Massachusetts adequately screens new registrants to avoid the kinds of fraud getting publicity in other states during this campaign season. Brian S. McNiff, spokesman for Secretary of State William F. Galvin, the top elections official in Massachusetts, concurred with Ms. Tomasia. Massachusetts uses a central voter registry to compile voting lists for all cities and towns, according to Ms. Tomasia and Mr. McNiff.[1]
