Many news reports have been filed of early voters in West Virginia stating that the electronic voting machines switched their votes from Barack Obama to John McCain. These problems have so far been isolated to Putnam and Jackson counties. Calvin Thomas of Ripley said of his experience voting, ""When I pushed Obama, it jumped to McCain. When I went down to governor's office and punched [Gov. Joe] Manchin, it went to the other dude." and Virginia Matheney stated , "When I touched the screen for Barack Obama, the check mark moved from his box to the box indicating a vote for John McCain." Many other voters have reported similar problems as well. [1]

Jackson County clerk Jeff Waybright believes that human error is more likely than a machine error. Waybright stated today that "People make mistakes more than machines," West Virginia Secretary of State Betty Ireland has informed voters that the company Casto & Harris programs the machines and that technicians have been sent to investigate in both counties.
