Biography
Halseth's family has lived in Nevada for five decades and she says that she became interested in public service "...when I was five years old. My mother worked in a nursing home, and I enjoyed going to work with her and spending time talking with the residents. As I was just beginning my journey through life, I was blessed to learn from the wisdom of people who had already seen and done so much in their lives. The lessons they had learned inspired me to make the most of my own journey, and leave this world better than how I had found it."
Halseth's motivation for running in 2010 was partly based on the fact that unemployment is higher in Nevada than in any other state and she wants to put policies in place to remedy that, she said: "Decisions made in Carson City affect my family and every family throughout the state. These decisions shouldn’t be made by a legislature full of professors and lawyers and career politicians. We need legislators who will actually feel the impact of the laws they write...This recession has cost our state more than any other state in the country, but by learning the lessons of the past two years, we can choose to change course and restore Nevada’s strong, pro-business tradition. I pledge to champion that tradition in Carson City and build a healthier future for our state’s economy."

2010
Halseth's campaign focused on policies in the areas of:
- Education. Halseth's website mentions a strong commitment to education and proposes three reforms, including making sure that education dollars go into the classroom, school choice, and implementing effective performance measurements.
- Taxes and spending: "Raising taxes is NOT an option!! Nevada can no longer afford to be governed by politicians who binge on tax dollars. Lean times create a necessity to examine programs to determine their effectiveness and value."
- Economic growth. Halseth says she will "fight against job killing regulations and tax increases and "support tax reductions to help spur development and job creation."
- Public safety: "As a mother raising a family their safety is my primary concern. So should the safety of all Nevada families be the State of Nevada’s primary concern. I will protect Nevada’s families as fiercely as I protect my own."
- Healthcare: "The ability of one to choose their own doctors and make their own medical decisions is crucial to preserving personal liberty. I will oppose any attempts at government run healthcare at the state and/or federal level."

On November 2, 2010, Halseth won election to the Clark County District 9 in the Nevada State Senate, defeating Benny Yerushalmi and Tom Jones.[3]

2010 Primary
Halseth defeated incumbent Dennis Nolan in the June 8, 2010 Republican primary by a margin of 9,197-6,973. Nolan was seeking his third term.
Across the country in 2010, state senate elections were held in 43 states. 1,167 state senate seats were at stake. In all 1,167 state senate districts with an election in 2010, only 19 challengers (12 Democrats and 7 Republicans) defeated an incumbent state senator. Halseth is one of the 7 Republican challengers who defeated an incumbent Republican state senator.

Nevada Policy Research Institute
The Nevada Policy Research Institute, a Nevada-based conservative-libertarian think tank, releases a "Legislative Report Card" evaluating members of the Nevada State Legislature on "each lawmaker's voting record on legislation impacting the degree of economic freedom and education reform." Bills determined by the Institute to be of greater significance are weighted accordingly. According to the Institute, "a legislator with a score above 50 is considered to be an ally of economic liberty".[5]
2011
Halseth received a score of 88.15% in the 2011 report card, ranking 4th out of all 63 Nevada State Legislature members.[5] Senators Don Gustavson (89.10), Greg Brower (88.63), and Michael Roberson (88.63) received higher scores. Halseth's score was followed by Senator James Settelmeyer (87.68).[6]
