Black is a farmer and businessman, operating Black's Fertilizer and Farm Supply since 1970. He also served as Manager of Langdale Farms, Teacher with the Ware County Board of * Education Committee, and an Extension Agent with Ware County Extension Service.
He is a member of the Brook's County, Echols County, Lake Park and Lowndes County Historical Societies, Clyattville United Methodist Church, President of the Lowndes County Farm Bureau of the Masons-Shrine, Southeast Agriculture Coalition, and coach with the Young Men's Christian Association.[1]
Party switch
Following his re-election as a Democrat in the 2010 general election, Black switched to the Republican Party. He explained, “When I was first elected, we had conservative Democrats in the leadership of the Democratic Party; today, there are none. I have a ten-year record of voting the thinking of my constituents, and I believe I can best serve my constituents as a Republican.”[2]

Teresa Lawrence ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 6, 2012. [3] Black defeated Teresa Lawrence in the general election.[4]

Black ran for re-election to the 174th District seat in 2010. He did not have any opposition in the July 20 primary or in the general election on November 2, 2010.[5]
