Ellis Black (b. July 28, 1942) is a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives, representing District 174. He was first elected to the chamber in 2000.

Black is a 2014 Republican candidate for District 8 of the Georgia State Senate.

Black served as Chair of the Lowndes County Board of Education from 1992 to 1996.

Biography

Black's professional experience includes working as a farmer, businessman, Operator of Black's Fertilizer and Farm Supply, Manager of Langdale Farms, Teacher with the Ware County Board of Education, and an Extension Agent with Ware County Extension Service.

Party switch

Following his re-election as a Democrat in the 2010 general election, Black switched to the Republican Party. He explained, “When I was first elected, we had conservative Democrats in the leadership of the Democratic Party; today, there are none. I have a ten-year record of voting the thinking of my constituents, and I believe I can best serve my constituents as a Republican.”[1]

Elections for the office of Georgia State Senate will take place in 2014. A primary election took place May 20, 2014; a runoff election will take place where necessary on July 22, 2014. The general election will take place on November 4, 2014. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 7, 2014. Bikram K. Mohanty was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while C. Ellis Black and John P. Page advanced past Richard David Raines in the Republican primary. Black will face Page in a runoff election on July 22, 2014.[2][3]

Teresa Lawrence ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[4] Black defeated Teresa Lawrence in the general election.[5]
