A Fairfax Business Tax Renewal, Measure I was on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Marin County for voters in the City of Fairfax, where it was approved.[1]

  • Yes: 1,519 (72.82%) Approved
  • No: 567 (27.18%)

Measure I renews for five years a tax that is already on the books. The existing tax generates about $465,000 annually for Fairfax, or about 7% of the city's $7 million budget.[2]

The question on the ballot was, "Shall an ordinance be adopted approving the renewal of a special Fairfax municipal services tax of $125 per year for each business occupancy and dwelling unit, for a period of five years to:

  • Maintain 24-hour, 7 days per week staffing of Police and Fire Services
  • Perform Public Works safety improvements
  • Provide matching funds for state and federal grants
  • Revitalize Youth Programs

Supporters

  • The Marin Independent Journal's editorial board supported Measure I. They said, "Unlike many taxes, this one is not going up. It raises $465,000 per year that the town needs to help pay for police and fire protection, public works jobs and local youth programs. It's money that is locally generated and locally controlled. Each of the seven candidates running for Town Council on the Nov. 3 ballot has endorsed Measure I. We agree with them."[3]
  • Measure I was endorsed by every member of the Fairfax Town Council and all seven candidates for three seats on the council.[2]
