A Fernley City Solid Waste Management and Franchise Ordinance Repeal Referendum was on the November 2, 2010 ballot in Lyon County for voters in the city of Fernley.

This measure was defeated

  • YES 2,470 (46.67%)
  • NO 2,822 (53.33%)Defeatedd[1]

This repeal referendum sought to make it so that there was not just one company providing services. If the city council had taken no action on the issue then it would have automatically gone one the November 2010 ballot for voters to decide on. Those that petitioned to have this issue on the ballot submitted 1,190 signatures with 604 verified, meeting the amount needed.[2]

The city council voted unanimously to put this issue on the 2010 ballot, so voters will be able to decide. If the referendum had been approved the city would not have been obliged to fulfill all its duties under contract with the current waste company, Trashpros.[3] The city council had appointed a committee to construct arguments for and against this proposed ordinance. The council did this in hopes of having both sides presented to better inform voters about the situation.[4]
