First 2011 state legislative elections signature filing deadline arrives at 4 p.m. today

TRENTON, New Jersey: Today is the first signature filing deadline for 2011 state legislative elections. Candidates wishing to run in the June 7 primaries in New Jersey must file 100 signatures to the elections office by 4 p.m today. There are no filing fees required.[1]
The timeline for New Jersey elections is tight because the new map for legislative districts was only just completed 8 days ago, after a contentious and heated battle over redistricting. A map favored by the Democratic Party was adopted on April 3.
This fall, all 40 Senate and 80 Assembly seats will be up for election.
Already, at least three incumbents have declared their intention not to seek re-election.
- Joan Quigley: On April 6, 2011 Assemblywoman Quigley she would not be seeking re-election in 2011. Her home was re-drawn out of the 32nd district during the 2011 redistricting process.[2]
- John Girgenti: On April 5, 2011, State Senator Girgenti announced he would not seek re-election in 2011. Girgenti's hometown of Hawthorne was moved out of District 35. [3]
- Jack Conners: On April 5, 2011, Assemblyman Conners announced he did not seek re-election in 2011, citing the fact that his district (District 7) was moved in the redistricting process.[4]
Democrats currently control both the Senate and Assembly.
