The Labeling of Foods that are Genetically Engineered Initiative was proposed as an initiated constitutional amendment for the November 4, 2008 ballot in Florida, but the measure ultimately did not qualify for the ballot.
The proposed measure would have required labeling of foods that are genetically engineered for any foods sold or distributed in or from Florida, allowing consumers the right-to-know whether foods they were considering purchasing are genetically engineered. Foods prepared, served or sold in restaurants for immediate human consumption were excluded from the proposal's labeling requirements.[1]
Floridians for Health Rights sponsored the initiative.
The petition was approved by the Florida Secretary of State for circulation, though only 3 signatures were verified by the state. It did not make the ballot.[2]
