The attorney general is authorized to issue formal legal opinions at the request of various public officials on questions relating to the application of state law and defends the constitutionality of statutes duly enacted by the Florida Legislature.
The attorney general, along with the Chief Financial Officer and the Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services, serves on the Florida Cabinet. The attorney general serves as legal advisor to the Cabinet and represents the Governor, and governor-directed state agencies, in litigation. Along with the governor, this body serves as a board of directors for several state entities, including Law Enforcement, Revenue, Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Veterans Affairs.
The current officeholder is Bill McCollum.
