McKissick is a former Chairman for the Legislative Committee of the Durham City Council. He is also a former member of the Durham City Board of Adjustment. He was the Chairman of the Durham County Democratic Party from 2005 to 2007. In 2007 he was appointed to the North Carolina State Senate. He has served in that position since, representing the 20th district.

Personal
McKissick earned his BA in Geography from Clark University. He went on to receive his MA in Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He then earned his MPA in Public Administration from Harvard University. He later earned his JD from Duke University School of Law.
McKissick is former partner for Faison, Brown and Broug, as well as for Dickstein, Shapiro and Morin. He has been partner of McKissick and McKissick from 1990 to the present.
