Former Kansas lawmaker wants seat back; files for candidacy
TOPEKA, Kansas: A former Kansas senator, who once served as a Democratic lawmaker, now wants his old seat back. This time, though, he's looking to represent the GOP. Mark Gilstrap, who served ten years in the chamber representing Leavenworth and Lansing, stated, "I've always been conservative."
Gilstrap had previously lost his re-election bid in the 2008 primary, experiencing defeat at the hands of Kelly Kultala, who then won the 5th District Senate seat. Gilstap filed as a candidate for the 2012 election for that same district during the week of June 6, 2011. He stated that if he were to retain his seat, he would "represent the good people of the 5th Senate District with traditional Kansas values and not special interest.”
