An effort to recall Fred Schmidt from his elected position on the Columbia, Missouri, city council was launched in May 2012.[1] The recall effort did not result in a recall election.[2] Schmidt represents the First Ward.

Reasons for recall

A group called Keep Columbia Free organized the recall effort. Mark Flakne serves as president of the group, and Mitch Richards is treasurer. Schmidt became the target of a recall campaign due to his vote to re-establish an Enhanced Enterprise Zone Board (EEZ). The purpose of the EEZ is to use tax incentives to entice businesses to bring manufacturing jobs to Columbia.[3]

Path to the ballot

300 signatures of First Ward voters would have been required to force a recall election.[1]
