Gary Cates (b. December 27, 1955) is a former Republican member of the Ohio State Senate. Cates served as Vice President of Union Township Trustee in 1991, 1994, and 1995. He also served as President from 1992 to 1993. He then served in the Ohio State House of Representatives from 2000 to 2004. During this time he served as Speaker Pro Tempore. He joined the Ohio State Senate in 2005, representing the 4th District. He left the Senate in May of 2011 when he was appointed by Governor John Kasich (R) to be the Senior Vice Chancellor for the division of Innovation and Enterprise Development at the Ohio Board of Regents.[1]

Cates is a Steel Applications Engineer.

Cates earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1978. He went on to receive his MBA from the University of Dayton in 1981.
