Gilbert was a coach of basketball/baseball/soccer at Bellows Free Academy for the Town of Fairfax School District from 1970 to 2006. He also worked as a teacher/curriculum coordinator/assistant principal for the Town of Fairfax School District during this time.
Gilbert earned his BSEd from Johnson State College. He went on to receive his MAT from the University of Vermont. He then received his MEd from Johnson State College.
