Biography
Hanson was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is a licensed real estate auctioneer, appraiser, and broker and owned a small business for 16 years. Hanson also has extensive experience in public service. He has served as a Sioux Falls' Utilities Commissioner for six years, two terms as the Mayor of Sioux Falls, and three terms in the South Dakota State Senate, where he was chairman of the Government Operations and Audit Committee and vice-chairman of the Taxation Committee.[1]

Hanson has served as a member of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission since 2003. He was re-elected in 2008.
Hanson has served as chairman of the PUC in 2005, 2008 and 2011.[2]
