Hanson was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is a licensed real estate auctioneer, appraiser and broker and owned a small business for 16 years. Hanson also has extensive experience in public service. He served two terms as the Mayor of Sioux Falls and three terms in the South Dakota State Senate, where he was chairman of the Government Operations and Audit Committee and vice-chairman of the Taxation Committee.
