Simpson ran for re-election in the 2012 election for Delaware State Senate District 18. Simpson defeated Matthew A. Opaliski in the Republican primary on September 11, 2012 and ran unopposed in the general election on November 6, 2012.[3][4]
Simpson was initially challenged by Gary Downes in the general election but his opponent withdrew on September 12, 2012 a day after the primary election.[5]

On November 4, 2008, Simpson won re-election to the Delaware State Senate from Delaware's 18th Senate District. Simpson defeated Gary Downes (D) in the election, receiving 14,596 votes as compared to 11,891 votes for Downes.[6] Simpson raised $41,095 for his campaign in 2008; Downes raised $27,205.[7]
