Edwards earn his B.S. in Business Administration from Fairmont State College in 1970 and his teaching certification from Frostburg State College in 1974. His professional experience includes being drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1970 and playing Fullback. He served in the Maryland National Guard from 1970 to 1976.

Edwards was born in Grantsville, Maryland on April 9, 1948. He is married and has two children. He is currently a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the Garrett County Development Corporation, the National Rifle Association, American Legion, Lonaconing Republican Club, Lions Club. In 1997 he received the Legislator Recognition Award from Maryland Association of Counties.[6]
