Since 1966 Flaharty has worked as a reading teacher at Oaklawn Elementary School. She has her BS and ME degrees from Wichita State University.
Flaharty has been involved with a number of community organizations, including the American Association of University Women, International Reading Association, Kansas National Education Association, Sedgwick County Zoo, and Wichita Center for the Arts.[1]

Issues
Flaharty refused to take Project Vote Smart's 2008 Political Courage Test. The test, which is administered to all candidates for presidential, congressional, gubernatorial, and state legislative offices, asks one central question - "Are you willing to tell citizens your positions on the issues you will most likely face on their behalf?"[2]

Flaharty ran for re-election in the 2012 election for Kansas House of Representatives District 98. She was unopposed in the August 7 Democratic primary and was defeated by District 96 incumbent Phil Hermanson (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[4][5][6]
2010
Flaharty won re-election to the 98th District seat against James Clendenin (R) and Dave Thomas (L). Flaharty had no opposition in the Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 2, 2010.[7]
