Thompson was a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing the 39th District from 2006 to 2012. She served as Minority Leader Pro Tempore.
Thompson is the founder of The Association to Preserve African American Society, History and Tradition, Incorporated. She has previously served as Assistant to the President of Valencia Community College from 1279-2003, and was a teacher in Orange County Public Schools.
Thompson is a member of the Holocaust Education and Resource Center Board, and Central Florida Young Men's Christian Association Board. [1]

Thompson won election in the 2012 election for Florida State Senate District 12. Thompson defeated Victoria Siplin in the Democratic primary on August 14, 2012, and defeated Fritz Jackson Seide (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[3]
