Glen Gainer (b. February 26, 1960, in Parkersburg, W,Va.) is the current Democratic West Virginia State Auditor. As auditor, Gainer serves as the state's official bookkeeper, chief inspector and supervisor over public offices, securities commissioner and the commissioner of delinquent and non-entered lands. He was first elected in 1992.[1]

Gainer was a 2014 Democratic candidate seeking election to the U.S. House to represent the 1st Congressional District of West Virginia.[2] He ran unopposed in the primary on May 13, 2014, and he was defeated by incumbent David McKinley in the general election on November 4, 2014.

Biography

Glen Gainer was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, in 1960. He earned a B.A. from the University of Charleston and later attended the Washington Center, a "leadership-building internship program in Washington, D.C."[1] Gainer worked for four years in the state treasurer's office, three years in the state Department of Energy and one year in the private sector before being elected auditor. He succeeded his father, who had served as state auditor from 1977 to 1993.[1]

Political career

West Virginia State Auditor (1993 - Present)

Glen Gainer has served as West Virginia's state auditor since 1993. First elected in 1992, he succeeded his father, who served as auditor from 1977 to 1993.

As auditor, Gainer serves as:

  • vice chairman of the West Virginia Consolidated Public Retirement Board
  • trustee of the West Virginia Investment Management Board and chairman of its Audit Committee
  • trustee of the West Virginia Board of Treasury Investments and chairman of its Investment Committee
  • chairman of the Interstate Commerce Appeals Board
  • a member of the Armory Board
  • a member of the Board of Public Works; and
  • a member of several other state boards and commissions

Gainer ran in the 2014 election for the U.S. House to represent West Virignia's 1st District.[2] Gainer ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 13, 2014, and he was defeated by incumbent David McKinley in the general election on November 4, 2014.

Gainer first won election in November 1992 and has been subsequently re-elected in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012.

Gainer was unopposed in the May 8 Democratic primary. He defeated Republican Larry V. Faircloth in the general election on November 6, 2012.[3]
