A Grand Junction City Sales Tax Increase will not be on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Mesa County for Grand Junction City voters. The measure called for a quarter-cent sales-tax increase to pay for either a new police and fire department buildings. Projects to be funded by the sales tax increase range from $53 million to $78 million.
On August 19, 2009 the Council voted 5-2 against pursuing a ballot measure. "As much as I want to see things start happening, the public has definitely stated that we need to slow down, we need to listen to what they’re saying, we need to get their input," said council member Bonnie Beckstein. Council members said in early August that they are reluctant to postpone the measure until November 2010. In November 2008 voters rejected a quarter-cent sales-tax increase and a Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights revenue-collection exemption to fund a $98 million initiative.
