Vital ran in the 2012 election for Tennessee State Senate District 10. Vital was defeated by Todd Gardenhire in the August 2, 2012, Republican primary. Incumbent Democrat Andy Berke did not seek re-election. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[2]
